Liberty Nickel Reverse
When the 1883 Liberty Nickel was first released, the denomination was expressed only as a large “V” on the reverse of the coin. This led some to gold plate the coins and attempt to pass them off as $5 gold pieces. The United States Mint corrected the problem by adding the word “CENTS” on the reverse of the coin, beneath the “V”. The design would remain unchanged for the remainder of the series.
