2009 Proof Platinum Eagle Obverse

2009 American Platinum Eagle Obverse

For the first time in the entire series, the United States Mint did not produce and offer bullion versions of the American Platinum Eagle. From 1997 to 2008, bullion coins in weights of one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce had been available. This year, only the one ounce 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle was available.

The obverse design featured the “Portrait of Liberty” designed and sculpted by John Mercanti. This is a depiction of the Statue of Liberty with the inscription “Liberty” above and “E Pluribus Unum” at left. This design has been used in common for the entire series, even as reverse designs for collector coins have changed.
