1964 Peace Dollar Fantasy Overstrike

Does the famous 1964 Peace Dollar exist? This is a question which may never be answered.

In 1964, authorization was received to strike up to 45 million new silver dollars. The nation was facing a coin shortage and silver coins in particular were being withdrawn from circulation. The United States Mint began production based on the ill-conceived legislation and struck more than 300,000 1964-dated Peace Dollars at the Denver Mint. Soon thereafter, an order was given to melt the coins.

Rumors persist that some may have escaped, but this may never be confirmed as the government has stated that any such pieces are illegal to own. It would be better for any owners to keep their rarity to themselves!

For now, we do have fantasy overstrike pieces and “copies” created by some private mints.
